Making a difference - One Senior at a time

Kevin Reneau, owner of senior helpers

Unlike many business owners, Kevin Reneau and his wife Pam look forward to the New Year 2009 with a very positive outlook. And they have good reason to do so. Their business, Senior Helpers based in Moraga,CA has thrived despite the slow economy and provided jobs for over 100 caregivers. They have also paid workers almost $400,000 cumulatively during 2008.

Impressive statistics for a business that started only in mid 2007! When the Reneaus had decided to buy a business, they researched the market and eventually chose Senior Helpers. “It felt like both a good service to the community in which we live and an excellent business model due to the growing senior demographic and the associated needs they will have for in-home care, now and in the future,” says Kevin Reneau. Senior Helpers is a national leader in professional in-home assistance services. Founded in Baltimore in 2001, they have rapidly built a reputation for providing only the best in dependable, consistent and affordable elderly care services. With people, resources, systems and knowledge necessary to make sure clients get as much or as little help as they need, to enjoy living independently at home.

Senior Helpers currently has over 200 franchises in the US and is the fastest growing in-home care business in the country. Dick Strong of Moraga tells us he is fortunate to have found Senior Helpers. His children had urged him to find a caregiver to assist his wife Charlotte with her daily routine. The Strongs are very happy with the caregiver provided by Senior Helpers. “We’ve had good luck with them and have referred several of our friends to Senior Helpers,” says Dick Strong. Strong especially likes the rapport he has established with Kevin Reneau. They both share years of history with the University of California and Strong is very appreciative of Reneau’s hands-on approach to the business. Indeed, Kevin Reneau spent 25 years working as a senior administrator at the University of California , supervising the communications and marketing areas for the intercollegiate athletic department. Among other accomplishments, he also served as the Media Director for two NCAA Basketball Regional Tournaments in Oakland,CA. Reneau draws a parallel between this background and running Senior Helpers. “In many ways, it’s very similar,” he says. “Management of people, multi-tasking, dealing with three dozen clients…it’s all very rewarding!”

It was also his family’s personal experience, caring for his mother who was suffered cancer before she passed, that spurred Reneau and his wife Pam in the direction of Senior Helpers. It offered them the opportunity to touch more people’s lives and help them stay independent and happy in their own homes. “People who live in the East Bay love the area. It’s where many of them still have family. And comforting memories of home,” explains Reneau.

There are also empty-nesters, whose children live out-of-town and out-of-state. As their parents age, they are concerned about their health and ability to cope with every day tasks. They want to offer supportive help to enable Mum and Dad to continue living at home, safely and comfortably. Senior Helpers has been called on to provide this much needed help on a regular basis. One loving son, who has worked with Senior Helpers, tells us that he now has peace of mind, even though he lives thousand of miles away.

Caregivers are available to assist with a wide range of services from in-home care like bathing, dressing, nutrition and light housekeeping. As well as helping with outdoor tasks like shopping, running errands, transporting clients to church, meetings, etc. Reneau tells us that they make one client very happy by enabling him to visit his cherished horse at the boarding stables on a regular basis. “Our job is to fill any need a client may have,” adds Reneau.

Clients are happy with Senior Helpers’ flexibility, affordability and dependability. Every one of the 150 caregivers available to work, undergoes a background check. They are also put through a training process. Reneau tells us that Senior Helpers is the only business in the East Bay that is an authorized American Red Cross Provider of the Family Caregiver Program.

Recently, Kevin Reneau was selected as the President of the West Regional Franchise Advisory Council for Senior Helpers. The Council represents all franchises in the region. Senior Helpers CEO Peter Ross tells us that they have three Regional Councils that provide feedback regarding marketing programs, new products and services, and support tools. “We at Senior Helpers are very fortunate to have Kevin and Pam Reneau. They received our award for the most 1st year revenue in Senior Helpers franchise history,” says Peter Ross.
